Watermelon Scent

Tremaine Emory’s reimagines symbols historically utilized to caricature Black identity is guided by a deep exploration of the African Diaspora and African American history, taking form through contemporary mediums. In this enquiry, Denim Tears reinterprets an American original: Little Trees car air fresheners.

The watermelon—weaponized as a racist stereotype following African American emancipation in the late 1800s—is recontextualized as a symbol of Black identity and cultural pride by recoloring Little Trees’ unmistakable evergreen silhouette.

Through artistic intervention, traditional packaging details are subverted with altered copy, and symbols of Black power and resistance such as black hands and a Pan-African Tree Flag.
